Analytical report
Needs assessment of educational institutions in Yangon, Ayeyarwaddy, and Mon state
The study conducted in 2016 assesses the educational needs in Myanmar, focusing on three specific townships: Labutta in the Ayeyarwaddy Region, Dagon Seik Kan in the Yangon Region, and Ye in the Mon State. The primary aim of the assessment is to identify key challenges that hinder access to education and to propose recommendations for improvement. By examining these areas, the study highlights the educational disparities faced by children, particularly those from low-income families and rural communities.
The findings of the assessment reveal several critical issues within the education system. Across all three townships, access to quality education remains a significant challenge, especially for marginalized groups. Many schools lack essential facilities and qualified teachers, contributing to a lower standard of education. Additionally, the dropout rate is alarmingly high, particularly among girls, due to socio-economic constraints and cultural factors. Furthermore, the current education system does not adequately align with labour market demands, limiting students' opportunities for future employment.
To address these challenges, the assessment recommends several key measures. Increasing investment in education, particularly in rural areas, is crucial for improving access and infrastructure. Enhancing the quality of education by allocating more resources to schools and training teachers is also essential. Additionally, making education more affordable for low-income families can help reduce dropout rates. Furthermore, aligning the education system with labour market needs will ensure that students gain relevant skills for employment. Lastly, the study suggests conducting further research on child labour and its impact on education, as this remains a critical issue affecting school attendance and learning outcomes.
